Is it time for me to have an eye exam?
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommends that individuals at any age with symptoms of or at risk for eye disease, such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or with a family history of eye disease should have a comprehensive screening eye exam now to determine their risk of eye disease and appropriate follow-up intervals.
The AAO also recommends that adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40--the time when early signs of disease and changes in the vision may start to occur. Based on the results of that initial screening, your eye care provider can prescribe the necessary intervals for follow-up exams.
